Free Coin Envelope Template

Coin envelopes with their slightly rounded corners and sweet flaps have always been a favorite of mine. I love tucking pictures, journaling, Victorian trade cards, specimen cards, lace, notes, memorabilia, and fussy cut ephemera inside. The standard envelope pales in comparison to charming and overly antique coin envelope. (Although, these vintage envelopes do give them a run a for their money.)

I recently created vintage printable butterfly and moth specimen cards for my Etsy shop and really wanted to store them inside a few coin envelopes, but I didn’t have any on hand. After looking at a few options online, I started wondering just how difficult it would be to make one. And then I started thinking about the infinite paper and design possibilities a template would provide. After a little trial and error, I successfully created two different templates — a large and a small.

After printing and cutting out my templates, I decided to create a whole bunch of different envelopes in one sitting to use on future projects. I knew I wanted to vary the base of each as an experiment and settled on using printable vintage wallpaper, book pages, printable vintage victorian sheet music, coffee-dyed ledger paper, and pieces of a calendar.

I traced the template on the bases and cut out each envelope. In some cases, I knew I wanted certain images in the center, so I strategically placed my template in specific areas. I carefully folded the edges and used a glue stick to attach the middle pieces together and the bottom. (Watch the process here on my YouTube channel.)

I couldn’t really believe the results — they were so gorgeous! I took my time and decorated each carefully using dried flowers, vintage laces, fussy-cut butterflies and birds, buttons, word art, fabric, pieces of ephemera, sari silk, doilies — you name it; I used it.

I left one completely blank because it’s my absolute favorite vintage wallpaper from my Dramatic Florals collection and I felt any addition would detract from it.

This entire process took about 2.5 hours and was so incredibly satisfying. It was such a treat to see the result of each after gluing the flaps down. The best part is I now have a whole drawer full of sweet little coin envelopes to use in projects. In fact, I already used one in a journal I created in a series on my YouTube channel, The Basics of Junk Journaling, which will be uploaded on Thursday, May 20, 2021.
