Since returning home from Grand Teton and Yellowstone, I’ve had this urge to start experimenting more with painting, drawing, and mixed media. I’m not sure of its source, but its pull is undeniable. I’ve always admired other people’s mixed media tags, so I decided the best way to feed this need was to create a space where I could start trying out some new techniques–and stay true to myself.

I wanted to create a tag journal with an actual spine so I could sew signatures into it. But, I couldn’t really find a way to do it easily without a template, so I made a few of my own. The first template is for the cover complete with a 2″ spine. The second template is for the tag-shaped pages, which can be simply folded in half and sewn into the spine.

I used coffee-dyed papers, as well as vintage magazines, music, and ledger paper for the inside pages. For a few, I applied some masterboard techniques with scraps of paper and fabric and added some loose sewing around the edges.

I created two signatures and sewed then into the 2″ spine to create two large X shapes vertically.

Feeling extremely inspired, I continued on to decorate the cover and inside cover with some ephemera, scraps, paint, and vintage lace and fabric.
