In the middle of an ongoing craft room declutter and redesign project, I was organizing some vintage greeting cards and came across a beautiful Mother’s Day card. I started thinking about motherhood and how it completely changed what I thought was the trajectory of my life. A few days later with it still fresh on my mind, it occurred to me the card would make a wonderful little journal. Fast forward a few hours later: I sewed a few sheets of gorgeous avocado dyed paper, vintage sheet music, and 1906 wallpaper into the sweetest little journal.
I decided to gather all of the little notes, drawings and holiday greetings my kids have given over the past decade. They were accumulating dust in the corner of my closet and threatening a garbage can revolt every time I gave it a good cleaning. Clearly, a a beautiful journal dedicated to motherhood was a more natural home than a dark, dusty closet.
I wasn’t feeling sentimental at the beginning of the project, but working through the pages, gluing their little love notes down, and really reflecting on my pregnancies and their early childhood, made me feel simultaneously weepy and happy. It suddenly became an extremely meaningful project. Motherhood completely changed my life — as it does for most — and while each day certainly does not offer unending parental bliss, the bond between me and my children and between my children and my own mom means more to me than anything. It truly is priceless.
